The ‘bad news’ is there is a problem, but the ‘good news’ is that there is a solution.
The problem – Declining agricultural productivity and low incomes
Mangos, coffee, coconuts, cotton and other crops are depressed in many areas because there are not enough [p2p type=”slug” value=”crop-yields-and-pollination”]pollinating[/p2p] native bees in the environment. This is mainly because the native honeybees are being killed by destructive [p2p type=”slug” value=”honey-hunting”]honey hunting[/p2p] methods – and this is also leading to less honey being harvested. Honey hunters are trying harder to find fewer bees, and so farmers, honey hunters and rural communities in general are becoming poorer, and the future prospects in the rural areas and for young people are being degraded.

The solution – How to help improve the future prospects of your students

In this way everybody in the rural community can benefit, and children may grow up in a country with a healthier and more prosperous environment.
Essentially this needs the engagement of individuals, schools and communities. Teachers and students can do this fun and educational activity as part of their school curriculum.
This educational activity is important because…
- it actively gives students a way of understanding the primary function of bees in their environment – as essential pollinators for plants.
- engages students with a clear objective – to learn something interesting and useful, which then enables them to add an entry into a real-life, scientific, computer-based survey which can help improve their environment in the future.
- uses a computer application in a constructive and safe way to find out information and help solve a problem – this is an important general skill.

- increases the general awareness in communities of pollination and how agricultural productivity may be improved.
